#ATEAB23 Crowdfunder a great success raising over £7,000

The festival community showed up and and showed overwhelming support for #ATownExploresABook23 and our aim to offer creative workshops and activities to thousands of school-age children. As the Crowdfunder closed on 25th October, our total had reached £7,607.

A Town Explores A Book returns for its 7th year in 2023 with a multitude of creative projects and events celebrating Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands, an autobiography and travel writing book by 19th century mixed race female writer, adventurer, medical practitioner, and business woman Mary Seacole.

This annual community arts festival 1-18 April 2023 invites a town and its visitors to explore a heritage novel though reader-led experiences that ignite interest, raise questions and give a platform to marginalised voices. The festival runs through the school spring holiday period providing a range of fun and colourful ways in which children and families can be introduced to the joy of books.

A big part of what makes A Town Explores A Book so successful is the generosity of the festival community. The programme will include a whole range of workshops and activities in local schools and outdoor art in the open spaces of the town. These will encourage the children to make their own responses to the themes of the book, both visual and written.

Exploration will focus on the 200th anniversary of Mary Seacole’s solo journey from Jamaica to London, undertaken as a very young woman of mixed race in 1823.

Every penny raised will go towards helping children to discover a new book and provide safe spaces to explore their responses and create art. Come join us to explore the artwork from 1-18th April!
