An exhibition by the Zoom Arts collective exploring the theme of challenge in Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands. Local artists respond to Mary’s Seacole’s articulation of the challenges she faces.

The most well known aspect of Mary Seacole’s experience was when she offered her nursing skills to troops in the Crimean conflict of 1853-1856, through the established channels in England  “Once again I tried, and had an interview this time with one of Miss Nightingale’s companions. She gave me the same reply, and I read in her face the fact, that had there been a vacancy, I should not have been chosen to fill it.”

Mary Seacole addresses this rejection by setting up her company, Seacole and Day, in partnership with Mr Day to offer catering and medical support close to the front.
