Researching Steam Trains
A fantastic research day.
Three trains sped core team members from St Leonards-on-Sea to the National Railway Museum at York and back for a research day in December.
Bronwen Firth reports, “ The trip to the National Railway Museum was a huge success. I gathered some great references of two era appropriate locomotives & various other railway related things like signals. We managed to find everything else in the museum library including carriages & tickets. The trip was amplified by SCRP director, Kevin Boorman’s, seemingly unending train knowledge.”
Cai Jones reflects, “It was a fantastic day. My colleague, graphic designer Bronwen Firth, can now confidently design the school poster and writing competition flyer with imagery that is appropriate to E. Nesbit’s publication date for The Railway Children of I905. I was fascinated to discover that the steam trains used in the I970 film, The Railway Children, directed by Lionel Jeffries weren’t all era appropriate.”
SCRP CIC are collaborating on a rail heritage project in the #ATownExploresABook24 festival supporting the community to explore St Leonards-on-Sea’s complex rail history and heritage. Partner community organisations include Hastings and Bexhill Mencap’s Active Arts who are creating one of the festival’s three activity hubs in The Clifton Centre, adjacent to St Leonards Warrior Square station.
